Detextification

and the unprecedented power of the spoken word

“God is not of the head, but of the heart!” From this conviction, I work in prison as a pastor. It is the outcome of my doctoral research. In it I put the original functioning of our Bible books, namely as spoken word or performance, in tension with the more-than-familiar medium in which we encounter it, the Bible as text. The result: detextification.

This approach provides insight into the influence of text on our typically literate mindset and then also access to the unprecedented power and possibilities of the spoken or embodied word. Developed in the context of Bible scholarship, I began to apply it to pastoring. Experience has taught me: by de-text-ing we get more to the heart!
