In this training we will work with an alternative approach to church services. We will work with consciously distinguishing between ‘printed text’ and ‘speaking’ (media), but especially between the ‘ways of thinking’ that come along with this (mindsets). The approach, detextification (literally: de-text-ing), is based on my PhD research into the original oral functioning of the biblical books.
‘The sermon as text is a communicative error’
In short: text brings us, as highly educated people, into an abstract way of thinking (head) – when we talk from heart to heart this is in a different mindset, therefore (ideally) the entire church service without printed papers (in preparation and execution). How do we get there? And, how do we not end up with bullshit? Based on a concrete Bible text we practice a number of steps: formulating a specific type of question for the Bible passage aimed at the heart; to work with in discussion groups, individual conversations or other meetings (‘question for today’).
‘Every media requires its own mindset’
Then, in this mindset – listening to stories and letting them resonate in the Bible story – work towards the church service (‘preparation as an undercurrent’) and – with a concrete structure – let the sermon or meditation come from your heart or body (‘performance’). Why participate? Clear steps, animated conversations with your intended listeners, a different access to the Bible and a possible new flow to experience in your standing for the community – I am always amazed: ‘Does this cost me energy?
